In the dying embers of the summer transfer window Celtic made an audacious attempt to take boyhood Celtic fan James McCarthy on-loan from Everton.

Due to injury and the reluctance of Everton’s chairman to get rid of the player the move failed, leaving Celtic scrambling at the last minute which also seen a move for James Morrison fall through.

Now that the January window is nearly upon us and it’s still glaringly obvious Brendan Rodgers wants a box to box midfielder it’s believed McCarthy is at the top of the list.

Rodgers seen McCarthy strut his stuff in the EPL for Everton when he was the Liverpool manager and is a huge admirer of the former Hamilton player.

Callum McGregor, Stuart Armstrong and Nir Bitton have been playing in the position Rodgers is desperate to fill so it could see the end for at least one of them if Rodgers gets his man.

Reports suggest an initial loan deal till the end of the season is what Celtic would prefer but with the reluctance of the chairman still there even though Everton boss Ronal Koeman doesn’t see the player in his plans could be a problem.

If Celtic manage to land the midfielder an option to buy will most likely be written in.

One thing is for sure, Rodgers isn’t messing about as he looks to strengthen his side.
