Celtic’s OFFICIAL greatest ever team was voted on in 2002 by the fans at the behest of the club.

Here are the 11 players that were deemed the best of the best by our support back then. Which was comprised of TEN Scots and only one foreign export, but we’ll bet you’ve already guessed who that is!

Celtic’s Greatest XI

Ronnie Simpson
Danny McGrain
Tommy Gemmell
Bobby Murdoch
Billy McNeill
Bertie Auld
Jimmy Johnstone
Paul McStay
Kenny Dalglish
Henrik Larsson
Bobby Lennox

This is of course always going to be subjective with so many fans having their own personal choices on who should have made such a starting XI.

However, we’re asking in the fifteen years that have followed since that vote, has any player made a case for bumping someone off that list?

Neil Lennon would be someone who I think would cause a lot of debate. Who else could be considered? This would have perhaps been an easier question had Celtic gone all the way in Seville back in 2003. We’ve had some impressive players over the past 15 years but has anyone left such an impression in a Celtic shirt that they can be mentioned in the same breath as a Lennox, Johnstone or Dalglish.

Over to you…

  1. My grandad used to swear blind Charlie Tully was the best player ever to wear the hoops .. I don’t know if this is true or not because he was old when he told me lol but he said Tully scored from a direct free kick and it got chopped off and he had to retake it and he scored again

    • He did. I had heard of that unusual feat. But my next door neighbour Tom Rae who played for Patrick Thistle in the 60’s(a good team then) scored twice direct from a corner kick. It’s in the record books.

  2. That is a fabulous team, and more or less what I’d have chosen. But my old man also raved about Charlie Tully who I never had the pleasure of seeing, and then we have Jimmy McGrory who I only ever saw in the dug-out, but who’s scoring rate is phenomenal. I personally think it’s impossible to choose a best eleven from a club like ours who’ve had countless amazing players in their history. Wonder what would be the outcome if we had to select a ”Lion free” team……….now that would be interesting…………..Hail Hail………….!

  3. No. Only nakamura and moravcik are anywhere near. Even though I never seen them guys like Mcgrory, Gallagher, bobby Collins etc would be in there going by statistics and folklore.

  4. Yes great team I saw them all play during my time it was an honour to see them all . Coronation Boner was good,Charlie Gallagher,Willie Wallace best signing for goals scored, and many others .

  5. As much is it pains me to take him out the starting XI, but I would replace Paul Mcstay (Legend) and replace him with Lubo

  6. Could make a case for lennon, brown, mcnamara, mjallby, moravcik hartson, but what a bench if they didn’t make it into the starting 11

  7. Tully scored from a corner which he had to retake and scored again .It was a cup tie against Falkirk I think.
A lot of Celtic fans of that generation really rated Charlie. I just caught the tail end of his career, but I was too young to temember much. I am 65 and my favourites were Jinky and Bertie Auld

  8. I would always make a case for Lambert. Instrumental in starting the revolution and bringing success to the club as he did wherever he went, Lennon and brown are both great but lambert twice the player of both in my opinion. HH
