EOGHAN O’CONNELL was thrust into the limelight on Saturday to make his first team debut for Celtic.

Injuries to Matthews and Fisher meant Ambrose was pushed out to the right giving the 18 year old a start in the heart of defence.

In an afternoon where there was a general flatness to Celtics play, the defender partnered Virgil Van Dijk as Celtic drew with Ross County.

The teenager opened up after the game, hoping to now kick on and get game time whenever possible.

“I thought I did all right, it was one of those games where you didn’t need to do anything spectacular. I have been on the fringe of the first team for a while, sitting on the bench. I just had to wait for my chance and take it when it came.” He said.

O’Connell is said to be highly regarded by Neil Lennon and his backroom staff. They hope to develop him into a first team player in the coming years. It certainly can’t hurt to be playing next to Van Dijk, that’s for sure.
