After reports last week that Lucas Leiva has been told he’s surplus to requirements at Anfield, the Brazilian midfielder has been linked with a move up to Celtic with his former boss.

While the 30-year-old would be a top addition to Celtic if he was to make the move to the 6-in-a-row champions it must be said that Rodgers has not always looked favourably on the midfielder and even tried to sell him while he was the boss at Liverpool.

Despite Lucas playing 98 times for Liverpool under Rodgers the Irishman encouraged interest in the player and the midfielder was close to a loan move at the start of the 15/16 season.

Brendan Rodgers is looking for top quality, reliable players and he may feel that Lucas injury history along with large wage demands may not be worth the risk. Of course, the Irishman is no stranger to signing former players when he feels they will add value ; signing Joe Allan for Liverpool and even Kolo Toure for Celtic who has been an impressionable influence behind the scenes.

A deal for Lucas looks unlikely but never say never.
