We have been spoiled this season with talented players putting in outstanding performances. This is why this year’s player of the season awards are ridiculously tough for all the right reasons.

However, in my mind, there is only one man who can be Celtic’s player of the year and that is Scotty Sinclair.

I haven’t taken this decision lightly especially when you think about Scott Brown’s resurgence and how much Stuart Armstrong has come on, lookinh more of a mature and well-rounded player. BUT there was a point in the season where Stuart Armstrong’s future was in doubt and it did take him a few months to convince Brendan Rodgers he was worthy of his starting place. While it’s impressive that he made the progress and breakthrough eventually it HAS to be noted since signing Scott Sinclair he’s hit the ground running at 100 miles per hour.

It was the first game of the season at Tynecastle when Brendan’s most expensive signing of the summer jogged onto the pitch and almost immediately made an impact, scoring the winner against Hearts and kick starting the Rodgers revolution.

Since then the player has been ever present, making things happen and being the creative flare up top with Moussa Dembele. While he’s had his quiet games, Scotty is the type of player who can come from nowhere to make an impact. He’s scored some vital goals and taken on the heavy responsibility it comes with playing for Celtic with minimal fuss.

The Celtic manager stated categorically at the start of the season we were very lucky to have Scott here. Having had a disastrous spell at Villa where they got relegated it was almost fortuitous that Celtic would get theEnglishman for a cut price when only a few years previous he was going for £15million.

At Aston Villa he could never shine, as Brendan pointed out himself, Villa spends large periods of the game without the ball and when Scotty was playing for them he spent the majority of his time doubling up as a defender giving him very little room for the creativity he’now showing in a Celtic shirt.

It would have been easy for Scott to go take a bigger wage packet somewhere else in the Premier League and be content. Instead the pull of Brendan Rodgers and the tantalising prospect of helping spearhead something special at Celtic Park seen the Englishman buy in and it has paid dividends for all involved.

Scotty has helped break records and put his name up with some very reputable company. Becoming only the 4th players to score a hat trick on the day the club clinched the league title – Joining Patsy Gallacher, Jimmy McGrory and Henrik Larsson.

These are the reasons I’d like to see him take the player of the year award. With PFA awards etc most Celtic standouts should be recognised overall.

  1. Can’t disagree with any of that, but can anyone ever remember a season when we had so many outstanding candidates for the honour (Ok, anyone under the age of 40)? If Brown, Tierney or Dembele were to win could anyone really complain? I bet the so-called football writers will give it to Johnny Hayes or something.
Scott Sinclair aside, my vote would go to Joey Barton.

  2. Can’t really disagree with any of your remarks, but I think Scott Brown was head and shoulders above everyone else. The question you have to ask is, who would Celtic miss more if they weren’t playing? I think hands down, Scott Brown! ( poetic finish intended)!
