Jonny Hayes was signed on a three-year deal on the 17th of June from Aberdeen for a fee of £1.3 million with Ryan Christie heading the other way on a season-long loan deal.

Many fans have came up with analogy that this signing won’t be an improvement for Champions League or he is not of the ‘quality’ but here’s why I think they’re wrong.

Jonny Hayes is known for his pace, power and skill all attributes the Celtic manager wants in his team. Remember, he scored the goal which ended Fraser Forster’s run of not clean sheet run and what a tremendous strike it was. As an Aberdeen player has also recorded another 3 goals against Celtic which include two scorchers and the other nearly cost us a treble.

A great technical player who really hasn’t had that many chances to shine on a bigger stage, he certainly showed some class in Europe against NK Maribor for Aberdeen, tearing them to shreds just for Joe Lewis to… miss the ball.

Obviously, you could argue that he’s nowhere near Patrick Roberts standard but they’re two different players. Patrick was a special player for Celtic, but Hayes even at 29 has  great ability which Brendan has recognised for some time.

Another great part of the deal is Ryan Christie only joins Aberdeen on-loan which means he can continue to develop and get valuable game time before returning to Celtic much like Roberts has returned to City.

Jonny will also love the thrill of Derby Day as his old tweets would suggest. When you couple passion and talent you can create some magic moments for sure and I wouldn’t bet against him doing it.

With most assists in consecutive years at Pittodrie, he’s surely going to be an asset to Celtic this season. He may not be Patrick Roberts but Jonny is a damn good hand and can chip in with some explosive goals.

I have no doubt when the player makes his Parkhead bow he will be welcomed warmly by the Celtic support who will hopefully give him the chance to settle before judging.
