There has been a lot of talk on social media over the past 48 hours about former Celt Joe Ledley.

The former Celtic midfielder who is still loved by the majority of the Celtic support is without a club and is actively seeking a new one. This has given birth to many Celtic fans giving it the old ‘ Bring him home’ treatment on social media.

The 30-year-old who has only been at three clubs in his career (Cardiff, Celtic & Crystal Palace) has had offers this summer but none which has excited him. The player is on record as saying he never wanted to leave Celtic and was a little heart broken when the club pushed him out the door on the last day of the transfer window to Crystal Palace. At the time Joe and the club had hit a stalemate in negotiations with his contract entering the last 6 months. Joe always believed a deal was on the card eventually but the club took the fee on offer from Palace and let the player leave.

There is no denying Joe was a big part of the Neil Lennon era, the Welshman turned in many great performances for the club under, the now, Hibs manager.

But are calls from Celtic fans to sign the player just a nostalgic symptom or could Celtic benefit from having Joe at the club?

Celtic are blessed with more than enough midfielders at the moment, therein lies the answers. Brendan Rodgers has spoken several times about not stock piling players and to bring in Joe to potentially sit on the bench would do damage to any legacy he did make it here the first time around.

While I have fond memories of the Welshman, they should stay as such and I wish him all the best in finding a new club. Something that should happen sooner rather than later.

  1. if he’s not good enough for Palace he’s certainly not gonna break into our midfield.
