Former Celtic striker and outspoken pundit Chris Sutton was full of praise for Brendan Rodgers’ side after their hard-fought 1-0 victory over Aberdeen on Wednesday night. The result not only secured three valuable points but also cemented Celtic’s status as the only unbeaten team in the league this season.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter) after the final whistle, Sutton hailed Celtic’s resilience in the face of brutal weather conditions and a spirited performance from the Dons. He wrote: “Enormous win for Celtic in wild conditions. Celtic had to earn it. Aberdeen gave it their all and pushed them all the way. Hatate with a stunning winner. Taylor great assist. Carter-Vickers a giant at the back.”
A Victory Ground Out in the Elements
Sutton’s reaction reflected the difficulty of the evening, as gale-force winds and relentless rain at Pittodrie disrupted the flow of the game. Celtic dominated possession, especially in the first half, but found it challenging to play their usual attacking football in the adverse conditions.
Aberdeen, determined to put their recent poor form behind them, pushed Celtic to the limit, coming close to equalising late on. Sutton singled out Cameron Carter-Vickers, whose crucial block in the 84th minute stopped a certain goal from Ester Sokler. Sutton’s description of the American defender as “a giant at the back” perfectly encapsulated his performance, with the centre-back proving instrumental in securing the clean sheet.
Key Performances Highlighted
Sutton also praised Greg Taylor, whose deft assist set up Reo Hatate’s decisive goal. Taylor, brought on at half-time for Alex Valle, made an immediate impact, delivering the kind of quality that had been missing in the first half.
Hatate, who continues to show his class in Celtic’s midfield, was another standout for Sutton. The Japanese international’s composed finish on 78 minutes was the defining moment of the match, giving Celtic the breakthrough they had been searching for.
Celtic’s victory means they remain the only unbeaten side in the SPFL this season.
