After a deal looked likely to be concluded with minimal fuss that would take Jonny Hayes from Pittodrie to Celtic Park. a late bid from Cardiff has thrown a spanner in the works.

While the player himself would prefer a move to the Scottish champions, Aberdeen has now told Celtic to up their offer to match Cardiff’s bid of around £1.2million plus add-ons if they want to get their man. Ryan Christie could also still be part of any deal.

Speaking earlier this week, Hayes seemed relaxed about his future.

He said: “We’ve obviously known about it (Celtic’s interest) for a while now. There have been a few things developing with the club.

“Whatever happens over the summer will happen.”

This has been met with somewhat of a tepid response for Celtic as they see the Hayes as a cost effective utility player who could do a job for the team. Celtic hadn’t envisioned forking out over £1million for the Irishman.

The manager and the board are now weighing up their options and will decide quickly if they will meet the new valuation of the player.

Should Celtic put up the extra cash for Hayes?

  1. Not for me , Christie will be class once he bulks up and should be part of the squad next year. Young Teddy Bishop at Ipswich would be a rest signing a playmaker of the future.

  2. Bollocks. If Celtic want him, pay the going rate. If the shoe is on the other foot and we were looking to sell, we would want ghee best deal for the club, same as Aberdeen are doing, some fans need to take the blinkers off, he is good player and would offer plenty to us, £1.2 is the tops. Pay it or move on .

  3. If Brendan wants him, the board should go out and get him. He is a winger that does more defensive work than anyone we have at the club at the moment and puts in a lot of effort for the team, so could be useful if we are defending in games or grinding out results. I think Christie and Ajer could be great players and I wouldn’t be happy to see either go without getting a chance. Hayes is going to be 30 as well before the league starts, so I wouldn’t like to see them pay too much.

  4. Up the offer! No bloody chance,he’s not worth the money we offered the first time never mind offer more! Never wanted him in the first place, nowhere near good enough! Looking to up the quality levels and johnny Hayes doesn’t come close to doin that!
