The Welshman, who enjoyed a successful spell at Parkhead earlier in his career, joins the League of Ireland side after stints in England and Cyprus.
Matthews first arrived at Celtic in 2011, signing on a pre-contract deal from Cardiff City. During his four years in Glasgow, he made 150 appearances and became a key part of a Celtic side that dominated the Scottish League.
He played his role in securing multiple league titles and domestic trophies, earning the admiration of the Celtic fans for his consistency and attacking threat down the right flank. [Irish Independant]
After leaving Celtic in 2015, Matthews moved back to England, joining Sunderland before later turning out for Bristol City and Charlton Athletic. His career then took him abroad, with Omonia Nicosia from Cyprus, linking up with Neil Lennon once more.
Now, Matthews is set to bring his experience and quality to Shamrock Rovers, who will hope his wealth of knowledge from both domestic and European football can bolster their squad.
At 33, the Welshman will bring leadership and professionalism to the Dublin side as they continue to build on their own domestic success. Shamrock Rovers fans will undoubtedly look forward to seeing Matthews make his mark in green and white once again—albeit in a different shade this time.
