Neil Lennon told Celtic fans he had called off Danny Simpson’s trial period because he was about to sign Hatem Elhamed in that position and was also in talks to bring in another right back which would leave no room for Simpson at the club.

The online social media rumours and hearsay are pointing towards a move for Silvan Widmer of Basel.

Stephen McGowan, chief football writer at the Scottish MailSport desk added to those rumours by suggesting Celtic were looking into the possibility of signing the right-back.

If that wasn’t enough, the player’s agent was in attendance at Celtic’s thumping win over Kalju on Wednesday night. Elliot Fillingham tweeted from his Celtic Park box as he took in the game.

What does this mean?

Celtic are very much actively looking for a first team right-back and see Hatem Elhamed as the utility man who can plug the gap in either the full-back position or at centre-half depending on where he’s needed.

Silvan, 26, was bought by Basel last summer for a fee of around €4.5m. (TransferMarkt)

The Swiss star made 42 appearances for his club last term.
