Former Celtic winger Aiden McGeady has named Hoops striker Giorgos Giakoumakis as a potential key player for Ange Postecoglou’s side, heading into this weekend’s Glasgow derby fixture against Rangers.

The Greek striker has been on fire in recent weeks, netting two hat-tricks in his last two outings at Celtic Park whilst also scoring a double on the road against Dundee United.

His form even recently earned Giakoumakis a recall to the Greece international squad, and the frontman is expected to be full of confidence going into this fixture at the weekend.

Speaking to Sky Sports, McGeady spoke of the threat that he believes Giakoumakis can bring to this Celtic side in Sunday’s game, as he insisted that he will give the opposition defence’ something to think about’ with his attributes.

“When Kyogo Furuhashi got injured, it was a big question of who would start upfront,” he said, as quoted by the Daily Record.

Giakoumakis was a relative unknown who had been playing in fits and starts. But the last six or seven games, he has been playing well and hitting the back of the net.

“He gives the team a different dimension. Kyogo likes to run in behind, is very sharp and has great movement. Giakoumakis is more a target man, but his goal record speaks for itself.

“He will definitely give the Rangers defence something to think about.

“I think it will be a tight affair on Sunday. Celtic have a strong defensive record this season. I don’t think they will be quite as expansive as they have been.

“I’ll say 2-1 Celtic.”

Thinking back to earlier in the season, there wouldn’t have been many who would have suggested that we wouldn’t be massively missing Kyogo Furuhashi going into such a crucial game such as this weekend.

Of course, it would be brilliant to have the 26-year old back involved. But, with the form of Giakoumakis and those around him, there is no longer that ‘need’ factor of when Kyogo was in the side earlier in the season.

Giakoumakis was able to show at points during the derby in February what he can offer against this Rangers defence, and I am sure he will be desperate to get himself on the scoresheet at Ibrox.
