Celtic defender Alexandro Bernabei was taken into custody on Monday morning following an incident in Glasgow city centre [Daily Record].
Police have yet to confirm the details of the incident with it being unknown as to why Bernabei was arrested. Both RecordSport and MailSport have reported it’s down to an alleged drink driving charge.
Sources have claimed that the Argentinian was taken to Stewart Street police station after the incident had occurred.
Bernabei featured on the bench yesterday for Celtic and was unused as substitute as the Hoops demolished Kilmarnock 5-0.
The fullback was signed only just this summer for a fee believed to be around £3.75 million but is yet to make any sort of impact at Celtic.
Bernabei was released from custody earlier today on an undertaking that he would appear in court at a later date.
“A 21-year-old man was arrested in the early hours of this morning, Monday, August 15 in Glasgow City Centre,” said a Police Scotland spokeswoman.
This issue won’t go away before an appearance in court and it becomes clearer what the circumstances were around Bernabei’s arrest.
Ange Postecoglou will not want distractions with his Celtic side having already got the season off to a flyer having won all three games with there being a lot of football still to be played.
Things will likely become a lot clearer in the coming weeks to the extent of the incident and what it now means for Bernabei and Celtic.
