Brendan Rodgers addressed the media after Celtic’s 2-1 win over Sturm Graz, providing a mixed reaction to what was an important European victory overshadowed by fresh injury concerns.
The Celtic manager saw his side come from behind to claim their first Europa League win of the season, but the night was far from perfect as both Alistair Johnston and Kelechi Iheanacho were forced off during the first half.
The injuries disrupted Celtic’s rhythm in the early stages and forced Rodgers into two tactical changes before the interval. Johnston appeared to pull up while sprinting back into position, while Iheanacho was replaced after just a few minutes, clutching his leg as he left the field. Both players were seen receiving treatment on the bench before heading down the tunnel.
The manager’s post-match tone reflected concern rather than celebration, as he acknowledged the nature of both injuries and the impact they could have on his plans ahead of Sunday’s vital Premiership trip to Hearts. Celtic’s squad depth has already been tested in recent weeks, and losing two key players would add to Rodgers’ selection headaches.
Rodgers kept his comments short but telling, admitting that the early signs were not positive for either player. The pair will now undergo further assessment before their fitness for the weekend becomes clearer.
He said: (TNT Sports), “The first two doesn’t look great, it looks like hamstring.
“But okay, that’s what happens.”
Rodgers’ frustration was understandable, given both players are huge parts of the team. Johnston’s defensive solidity and attacking energy have been vital down the right, while Iheanacho’s movement and hold-up play were expected to be key in Celtic’s European push. Losing both simultaneously would represent a significant blow at a crucial stage of the season.
With the trip to Tynecastle looming, the timing of the injuries could hardly be worse. Celtic will need to rely on squad depth and adaptability, with players like Anthony Ralston, Colby Donovan and Johnny Kenny likely to step up if required.

Rodgers’ pragmatic tone suggests he knows these challenges are part of the job, but the strain on his squad is becoming difficult to ignore. Celtic’s ability to manage these setbacks may define how they handle the congested schedule that lies ahead.
For now, Rodgers can take pride in the result and performance against Sturm Graz, but his focus will quickly shift to the treatment room, where updates on Johnston and Iheanacho will determine just how much reshuffling is needed before the trip to Edinburgh.

It’s time for the Young guys to step up when needed and for the old heads to show them the way Hail Hail
Carter Vicars and Johnston never off the long-term sick bed. Daizen Maida, also hamstring injury, will be missing for the all-important Hearts game. Now Iheanacho off with hamstring injury while his deputy Johnny Kenny is not up to the quality standard for Celtic. Maybe Rodgers will have the sense to bring Shin Yamada back in from the cold for Sunday, although I doubt that will be enough. It’s not looking good for this underweight Celtic squad. Hope I’m wrong!
I dont think he really has any other choice than to bring in Yamada.
I expect it’ll be on the bench tho’
