If you are an avid follower of Celtic players’ social media accounts, you will have seen Alistair Johnston enjoying himself at a driving range on Instagram on Tuesday.

The Canadian posted a photo on his story from a driving range looking out onto a beautiful, picturesque green which was populated by a plethora of golf balls. He captioned the post saying:

“and so my Scottish midlife crisis begins”

At 24, Johnston is being rather modest by labelling golf as a midlife crisis, but nevertheless, it is encouraging to see him enjoying himself off the pitch. The Canadian undoubtedly deserves it after his efforts so far in green and white.

In just 12 Celtic appearances up to this point, Johnston has greatly impressed and been more than up to the mark. He has stood out in several fixtures in both defence and attack, having contributed to six Hoops clean sheets and two goals through a strike of his own away at St. Mirren and an assist at Tynecastle at the weekend.

In terms of the international front, the 24-year-old does already have 32 Canada caps to his name (including three at the Qatar World Cup) and will be looking to add to said number this month in matches against Curacao and Honduras. Canucks manager John Herdman, though, is yet to name his squad, although it is almost certain Johnston will be included.

When he goes back to his homeland for international duty, Johnston will likely miss out on his newfound pastime, much to his despair. Let’s hope, however, the right-back doesn’t develop his golfing ability as much as his footballing skills.
