Former Hearts boss Craig Levein has explained why he believes the move of on-loan Celtic defender Shane Duffy, hasn’t worked out after high expectations in the summer.

As reported by the Brighton & Hove Independent, Levein stated how good a player the Irishman is but his move to Celtic just doesn’t suit the style of player that Duffy is, which may have been better for old Brighton sides in the Premier League, who are more used to defending their penalty area and not having as much of the ball as a team like Celtic would.

“Shane Duffy is a really, really good player but he played in a Brighton team that defended deep. Celtic’s defence are always going to be close to the halfway line.

“Celtic’s centre-backs have to be able to run. They have to be quick. Shane Duffy doesn’t fit what Celtic do, he’s very good, but it doesn’t make sense to me.”

Duffy, who missed Thursday nights defeat to AC Milan after picking up an injury knock in training on Wednesday, has come under heavy criticism this season.

When the central defender signed in the summer there was a lot of hope and expectation surrounding him as a player and also with him being a Celtic fan there was an added hope that this would work out.

However, it simply hasn’t worked out and in a way, Levein has a point, he really doesn’t suit the system we look to play and that has been shown in games so far this season. The money we are paying Shane make it look like an expensive mistake.
