BRENDAN RODGERS has come in for a lot of criticism after the Anderlecht game for defending his side after such a shocking performance.

Some Celtic fans have gone completely over the top in their criticism of the team since Tuesday. Of course, their performance warrants forensic examination and they should be criticised for not turning up, but people wanting the manager to do that in the public eye to make them feel better are just downright stupid.

There are some managers that wear their hearts on their sleeve and you will always know what they’re thinking. Neil Lennon is the perfect example of this when his side doesn’t play well you can be sure we will all hear the scathing criticism of his players on TV and Radio. That might motivate some players but it can alienate a lot of professionals if their manager is taking shots at them in the public eye.

Brendan Rodgers has done the correct thing. Outwardly, he has said the performance was unacceptable but didn’t single anybody out. He also praised the players for achieving the goal that was set for them, which is also the right thing to do.

If you think that was the end of the fallout from Tuesday then you will be sadly mistaken. While Brendan comes across calm and measured, the Celtic manager does not shy away from telling the players what they might not want to hear when they’re on the training ground.

The Irishman has the respect of the whole dressing room because he can discipline in a way where it will help rather than hinder a players confidence and development.

This week there will have been a lot of tough talks at Lennoxtown about the manner of the defeat and the players will know themselves that things need to improve.

With PSG and Bayern not a realistic barometer of where we’re at, a bad game against Anderlecht does not make Celtic a bad side, especially after hammering them in the away leg.

Some Celtic players need to start performing or they will know themselves that their place in the team is not guaranteed. Shape up or ship out.

  1. Unfortunately we have quite a number of supporters who are not in the slightest bit realistic and believe that they are the experts. I would bet they don’t think that they themselves had bad days.
I wonder how they would react if their boss publicly criticised their displays at work.

  2. Completely agree here but for one part, the part about Anderlecht away. Now, this is not a criticism I’m just stating a fact that seems to somehow pass everyone by. We were very, very lucky to come across anderlecht when we did, they were rudderless and an absolute farce, if anderlecht were in the condition they were in like when they paid a visit to celtic park, then we would not be dropping down to the europa league, this is a fact everyone seems to be deliberately ignoring, lets face it, we got lucky for a change so lets just enjoy it, I for one though do not think we have improved one bit from last year, but I feel that that will be changing very soon, but at least be honest about it and admit it, we have not improved, we got lucky is all.

  3. If we dont get some decent quality in the next window,We wont be in the Europa for very long.Long Gone are the days when any team coming to Parkhead felt lucky even getting a draw.We have some great talent in that team,But for some reason its not happening on the park.Realistically,Our defence needs looked at,We havent improved in Europe. We are there for the Humping….thats Reality.Brendan must know we need some decent players..HH n Awrat
