Ange Postecoglou has been a straight shooter in his interviews so far with the press and the fan media. He might be honest to a fault on occasion.

He’s not shirked away or tried to hide the enormity of the task in front of him. Going into Tuesday night’s game at Celtic Park, the squad has very little depth and we’re missing quality in key areas.

Asked about the squad’s fitness heading into the tie, Postecoglou again was honest and revealed the players aren’t where he wants them to be in terms of fitness.

Speaking to Clyde One, the Celtic boss puts that down to a number of factors:

“If we are going to challenge on all fronts we are going to need a strong squad and at the moment we don’t have that.

“We have had guys coming in at different times, whether that was because they had different end dates (to last season) others had to quarantine, others were on international duty.

“They are sort of all at different levels but what I do know is that we worked them really hard the last week to try to get them all up to a certain level.

“I don’t think any of them are at the fitness they need to be at for what’s ahead but I am confident that all of them are in a good enough condition to put in a good performance tomorrow night.”

Celtic face a tough side when they come up against Midtjylland. We know it gets even tougher when we look at what’s ahead. If we do get past the Danes, we then have PSV or Galatasaray to contend with.

Celtic have to be as positive as they can and believe they can get a result. It’s not going to be easy but there are some top players in the team that might need to carry a few passengers on the night if we are to grab a victory.

The rebuild is not going to take just one window, but we need to see progress quickly or we’ll give our rivals so much encouragement.
