Former Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou has reportedly decided to step away from football for the foreseeable future, ending any hopes of a sensational return to Parkhead.
According to SunSport, Postecoglou will take time out of the game following his brief 39-day spell in charge of Nottingham Forest, bringing an abrupt halt to speculation linking him with a comeback to Glasgow after Brendan Rodgers’ exit.
The Australian coach, who remains hugely popular among the Celtic support, has told those close to him that he intends to recharge before considering his next move. His decision comes after a whirlwind few years that saw him transform Celtic into a dominant domestic force before moving to Tottenham Hotspur and later taking the Forest job earlier this year.
Postecoglou’s name had quickly been thrown into the conversation as a possible candidate to return to Celtic, particularly given his success in rebuilding the club after the failed ten-in-a-row campaign. Under his leadership, Celtic rediscovered their attacking identity and lifted five major trophies, including back-to-back league titles.
However, his short and challenging stint at Nottingham Forest appears to have taken its toll, with reports suggesting the 60-year-old is in no rush to jump back into management. His decision to step away removes one of the more high-profile options from Celtic’s managerial shortlist as Dermot Desmond, Michael Nicholson, and Paul Tisdale continue their search for a permanent replacement for Rodgers.
For many fans, Postecoglou’s return would have been the dream scenario, a chance to reignite the same energy and clear football vision that defined his time at Parkhead. But for now, Celtic will have to look elsewhere as Postecoglou prioritises rest and reflection after a relentless spell in management.
