ANGE POSTECOGLOU has spoken about the need to be three or four windows ahead in order to replenish talent and keep Celtic moving.

The Australian admitted he knows some of his top stars he brought in just over a year ago will be in demand after the World Cup and in the summer. That’s why he and Mark Lawwell have been dividing a plan for recruitment that’s well beyond this season.

The Celtic manager was asked if January could be a busier window than usual due to it falling straight after the World Cup, Ange replied: “Yeah, you’re right. And that’s part of it. We showed last year that we always want to stay ahead of the game.” Ange told RecordSport.

“We will look to bring in players in January that hopefully then insulates us in case any of our players are taken off our hands. It’s part of our planning and we’re well underway in ensuring we are ready for that.

“Mark [Mark Lawwell] knows how I look at things and we’re planning for the next two, three, four windows – and trying to project what gaps we potentially might have. We look at the age demographic of our list and we have a lot in the younger bracket at the moment.

“We know that in the next few years that will progress and some of our players will move on. So we’ve got to make sure that we have players in the age group underneath who we can bring in and develop.

“You don’t just look at what the immediate concerns are, you look at medium term and long term issues as well. That’s just as important.”

Celtic’s recruitment under Ange has been largely successful. Bringing in players for relatively low values who will no doubt leave the club for big money over the next 18 months to two years.

Having a steady flow of players coming in to replenish the squad is absolutely the right thing to do. We saw in the lockdown season, even if you hold onto your best players, it doesn’t guarantee success. Lots of players can lose their motivation after a few years at the club.

The recruitment also needs to be able to withstand Ange not being a part of it. We can’t have a scenario where the Hoops boss moves on and all our plans are derailed. That’s why Mark Lawwell is a big part of things now.
