CELTIC has picked up the first point of their Champions League group with a 1-1 draw away to Shakhtar Donetsk.

It was a game when Celtic kept threatening the goal but failed to get their second of the night despite chance after chance falling for Celtic.

Despite many fans describing the draw as dropping two points, the Celtic manager is in good spirits and has praised his team for their performance in Poland.

As quoted by the Daily Record, the Aussie manager believed his team was ‘excellent’ and promised that the rewards would soon surface if the team kept up their performances.

“The performance was excellent. It’s always difficult at this level to dominate games but I thought we started the game really well, got our goal, and then obviously they got their goal.

“I thought we regrouped really well after that second half. The performance was excellent, but obviously the result was not reflective of that.

“The player’s gave everything. That’s all I can ask for. We needed that second goal, and we had good chances to get it.

“From my perspective I can’t ask any more of them. We’ll get our rewards if we keep playing that kind of football and showing that kind of commitment.”

In Europe, you need some luck. Over the past few European games, things just haven’t gone Celtic’s way.

Soon enough, Celtic will get some more points on the board, and we’ll be able to get a clearer idea of what a realistic target for this group will be. Second place is up for grabs and is the preferred finish for most fans, but third place wouldn’t be the end of the world, dropping down into the Europa League.
