If ever there were a time to give the Celtic fans a massive boost, it’s now!

The January transfer window is here! Bringing the absolutely ludicrous together with the equally improbable. Being linked with League 2 players to Swedish superstars.

With every window brings expectations and with the last window falling bitterly below even the most average of those expectations (Van Dijk aside)  it’s now up to Celtic to deliver in January – a notoriously hard time to get any players in at a decent price.

Since about the middle of December we have been told by the manager that he is actively looking to better his squad, recognising that the team needs freshened up. Last week Neil Lennon went as far as saying Celtic could go out and pay £6 million for one player – whether that was a realistic comment or it was Neil’s way of publicly calling out the board to back his plan with cold hard cash remains to be seen.

What’s certain is that this squad needs a striker who can find the net on a a regular basis. We have stagnated in January windows in the past and famously never backed Gordon Strachan who went on to lose the league on the last day of the season. While we are now in a different position our need for a new hero is still great.

Is that man Alfreð Finnbogason or Steven Fletcher? I’m not sure we’ll ever see either in a Celtic jersey. I’m hopeful that the Celtic boss has other names up his sleeve in a bid to solve our lack of goals.

It’s worth noting we have already signed a striker in the form of Aron Friðjónsson but he seems to have fallen under that dreaded ‘work in progress’ category – We need someone for the here and now.

Some fans may think there is no rush to sign player in this window because we have the league all but wrapped up and the Scottish cup could be won with the group of players we currently have. I wont dispute these claims, however I will point to the bigger picture and say it would be great to get players in now so they’re well established in the team come next seasons early European qualifiers.

So Zlatan, if you’re listening….get a move on!
