The pair were pictured warmly embracing each other before Sunday’s Glasgow derby, but Engels remained tight-lipped on what was said.

He is currently away on international duty with Belgium and was recently put in front of the press.

The 20-year-old’s reunion with Clement came up, where he was jokingly asked if the Ibrox boss wished he was on his bench, and not Celtic’s.

“I don’t know”, replied Engels (Football Scotland).

“But I think so. It’s not for me to say. I am now a Celtic player and I am immensely proud of that.”

Even if Clement wanted Engels at Rangers, his club could have in no way been able to finance a move.

Indeed, the midfielder cost Celtic a club-record £11m fee, a price tag which has been alien in Govan for the past few years.

Engels made the right choice in joining the Hoops, and there remains a bright future ahead for him in Glasgow’s east end.

Brendan Rodgers playing the Belgian for the last half-hour on Sunday when he only signed for Celtic on Friday night says a lot about what he thinks of him.

Along with the fans, the boss has high hopes for Engels, and it will be engrossing to see how his Celtic career pans out.

Highly rated in the Bundesliga, the midfielder comes in with a solid reputation that he will only look to improve in both Scottish football and the Champions League.
