Auston Trusty’s man-of-the-match display in Bologna was nothing short of heroic, and it was his “favourite” night in the green and white hoops.
Frozen out under Brendan Rodgers and astonishingly left behind Dane Murray at times, even during an injury crisis, the American international has proven his worth tenfold since Martin O’Neill’s return.
Trusty was monumental on Thursday night, defending like a man possessed as Celtic clung on to a vital 2-2 draw away from home.
Not only did he pop up with what proved to be a crucial goal, stabbing home a Kieran Tierney corner for Celtic’s second of the night, but his defensive numbers were just as jaw-dropping. One clearance off the line, three blocks, 17 clearances and three interceptions, it was a truly mammoth shift in the heart of defence.
If Mauricio Pochettino wasn’t watching, someone from the USA camp surely was. The World Cup squad selection looms this summer, and Trusty’s chances of making it have never looked better.
He was rightly buzzing after the game, taking to social media to say:
