Auston Trusty has spoken glowingly about Martin O’Neill’s influence since taking over as interim Celtic manager, describing him as a “legendary coach” who has quickly won over the dressing room.
O’Neill returned to the dugout in late October to guide the team through a difficult spell following Brendan Rodgers’ departure. Since then, he’s lifted spirits with wins over Falkirk and Rangers before Thursday’s setback against Midtjylland. Despite the short-term nature of his role, O’Neill’s presence has clearly had a positive effect inside the camp.
Trusty, who was brought back into the starting lineup under O’Neill, admitted he hadn’t known the manager personally before his appointment but has been impressed by both his personality and approach to the game. He said: (Celtic FC YouTube), “He’s great. I said before I didn’t know him personally before he came in, but his charisma and I said I didn’t realise actually how funny he is too. It’s been really great.
“I think all the guys have really welcomed him in. We really accepted him and he’s come in and we’ve all really enjoyed it.
“Yeah, absolutely. He’s a legend of the game, legendary coach. He’s a wealth of knowledge for all of us to tap into.”
Trusty’s comments show how much O’Neill has lifted the mood around the team. His experience and personality have helped bring the squad closer together, even with all the uncertainty over who will take the job long-term.
