With just three days left of the January transfer window, Celtic could soon face their biggest transfer test of the month, and it’s coming from Italy.
RecordSport reports that Fiorentina and Lazio are both considering late moves for Auston Trusty, the American centre‑back who has quietly become one of Celtic’s most consistent performers this season.
It’s not hard to see why the Serie A sides are interested.
Trusty’s two best performances in a Celtic shirt have both come on Italian soil. First at Atalanta in the Champions League last season under Brendan Rodgers, and most recently in Bologna this campaign where he was a rock in defence despite the chaotic nature of the game.
Both Fiorentina and Lazio have had Trusty on their radar for some time, but it’s understood that their interest has intensified in recent days as they look to strengthen their defensive options before the deadline.
With Cameron Carter‑Vickers still out injured, the Hoops are desperately light at centre‑half. Martin O’Neill has already spoken publicly about needing defensive reinforcements, and losing one of your best defenders in the dying days of the window could leave the back line perilously thin.
It’s easy to imagine Trusty being tempted by a move to Serie A, the football, culture and challenge are all appealing to a modern centre‑back, and the player himself will almost certainly be flattered by the attention. It’s the kind of opportunity many players would explore.
But Celtic cannot afford to let him go right now. Not when they are chasing a title, still involved in Europe, and dealing with limited options at the back. The club need stability, not upheaval in defence.
And before anyone sees Trusty’s name missing from the team sheet this weekend and starts worrying, fear not. He is suspended for the Falkirk match, and that explains his absence perfectly.
