Auston Trusty marked his return to a back four under Martin O’Neill by posting on Instagram after Celtic kept a clean sheet against Dundee United at Celtic Park.

It was Trusty’s first game in that defensive shape since O’Neill last left the club on December 3. The result also marked the first shutout since O’Neill’s return to the dugout.

The context around Trusty’s role made the performance stand out. Under Wilfried Nancy, Celtic often operated with a back three that asked different questions of the defenders. Saturday’s match saw a clear shift back to a more traditional setup.

Trusty looked comfortable from the opening minutes. He held his position well and dealt calmly with the limited pressure Dundee United managed to create. The simplicity of the system appeared to suit him.

Celtic as a whole benefited from that clarity. The back line stayed compact and avoided the drifting gaps that had caused issues earlier in the season. With a stable base behind them, players further forward could play with freedom.

The clean sheet carried quiet significance beyond the scoreline. Celtic have often dominated games without fully controlling moments at the back. Against Dundee United, that control finally returned.

Trusty’s role was central to that improvement. He read the game well and avoided forcing challenges. His positioning allowed Celtic to recycle possession rather than defend deep.

The return to a back four also helped simplify decision making. Each defender had a clear zone and clear responsibility. That reduced hesitation and allowed quicker recovery when possession was lost.

O’Neill’s influence could be seen in how the defensive line operated as a unit. There was no sense of panic when Dundee United advanced. The shape held and danger was limited early.

This performance offered a reminder of what Trusty brings when used in a system that suits him. His strengths are clearest when structure supports his game. Saturday provided that platform.

For Celtic, the clean sheet felt like more than a statistical note. It represented a step towards balance after a disrupted period. Confidence can grow quickly when defensive order returns.

As fixtures continue to arrive with little rest, that stability will be tested. Celtic will need consistency rather than one-off displays. Trusty’s showing suggests he can play a part in that effort.

The afternoon did not solve every issue facing the squad. It did, however, show how small adjustments can restore control. For Trusty and Celtic, it was a sign of things settling again.
