ARJEN ROBBEN has insisted with Celtic’s team and their amazing support behind them they can book themselves into Lyon for the Europa League Final next year.
The Dutchman who has been full of praise for the club as a whole over the past 48 hours genuinely believes anything is possible with the Celtic fans behind them and the talent on the pitch.
“Celtic have a great chance to progress in the Europa League, especially at Parkhead with that kind of crowd.
“If it’s 14 years since they reached a European final then I wish them all the best and I hope they can be successful again.”
I see a more European than British style in the way Celtic play. That’s why you have to give a big compliment to Brendan Rodgers.”
Robben was said to be touched when Celtic fans clapped the player off the pitch when he was substituted on Tuesday, admitting it’s something he’s never seen before.
Whatever happened to taking a measured view of things. It is either hysteria over a few bad results or believing the hype of players who have walked away with 6 points out of 6 without having to try too hard. Whatever happened to realism. Celtic will qualify for the EL not because of any great improvement made but simpoly because we got lucky by drawing Anderlecht, who are possibly the worst team in this years competition as they have fallen apart since the start of the season. This is the truth. Does anyone think that Celtic would have qualified if they had drawn any of the other Pot 3 teams; Tottenham, Liverpool, Basel, Besiktas, Olympiakos or Napoli. No, we may not have got a point. So the EL it is and it would be a foolish man that would bet a large sum on Celtic getting any more than 2 games. Based on what? Performances and recent history. We have not won at home in the CL for years. Going into European games without strengthening the team was suicide and we have lost three out of four. It is by no means certain that we will beat Anderlecht in December, despite them having chucked it. We will go through as they will not win 4-0 at Celtic Park. But it is not helpful to start deluding ourselves about where we are at the moment. It only increases expectations which cannot be attained.
A crowd and a special atmosphere do not win football matches. At European level all players have played in front of capacity, noisy crowds but fans don’t win games. Celtic’s recent terrible record tells you this. Maybe behind closed doors would freak the opposition out and give us a real advantage. Because we are going to wait a long time for opposition players to wilt and give us a win.

We ahve been at games with over 100,000 and do not resort to calling fellow supporters Huns because they have the temerity not to dance up and down the street every time Celtic get beat in Europe and a foreign star says how much he enjoyed the atmosphere. Andy, just because it is not the 60s or the 70s does not mean that Celtic should not even try to strengthen. You do not need to spend 30 million to sign better players than Boyata and ones who are more reliable than Jozo. The mentality at Celtic is for ‘participation’ only, no attempt is being made to go beyond the groups as this would require a level of speculation. Boyata, Jozo Big Erik could be flogged in January we would get 7-8 million for the three. Stick another 5-6 million on to that and Celtic could buy two fit, strong, capable CBs that would do a much better job than the guys we have. We cannot go into European games playing the same players that have failed repeatedly. That is poor. If we can stop slapping ourselves on the back for providing our opponents with ab great experience we would also notice what the press and supporters are actually saying about us as a football team. ‘Not last 16 material’ is what the Germans are saying. Tierney a ‘great talent’, Armstrong and Forrest ‘promising. The rest ‘not good enough’. Defence is ‘poor’ and we cannot ‘score goals’. They mention that we have scored 4 goals, 3 against a terrible Anderlecht team yet Alaba has scored 5 on his own in this campaign alone. It’s funny how the new Celtic supporters will listen to any praise about atmosphere yet completely ignore or dismiss as irrelevant the views of the same people when discussing out team. The Munich press also suggested we will never get out of the of groups playing teams with players such as Boyata. These are simple facts that are staring us right in the face but we prefer talk about the singing at the game and our participating than anything else. If the Celtic board and management had done their job properly during the summer, recruitment would have been better and we may have got something out of the game the other night. And that is a fact. How come everyone only ever praises the atmosphere when they get three points? And just to cement my new staus as a ‘Hun’ one artcile from Germany says the atmosphere is up with a full San Siro, Juventus’s ground when half empty, Anfield and almost every ground in Germany. But see how great the atmosphere if it is another 4 years without a CL win.

I do agree with John on one of his main points, we do not need billionaire owners to strengthen, we can buy young prospects or even some good experienced players not getting used down south. Celtic at the moment care too much about profit margins and not being able to progress further in European competition.
