James McCarthy has had a very slow start to his Celtic career. Some were expecting that due to his lack of fitness after leaving Palace at the end of last season.

After making his debut from the bench last month – the midfielder disappeared from sight with no real explanation why.

The Irish international eventually came on against Real Betis on Thursday night after Ismailia Soro had a torrid time in the middle of the park.

Soro was booked early and was skating on thin ice for the rest of the game.

Most fans wanted to see the McCarthy for Soro sub in the first half but it didn’t materialise.

Pat Bonner has revealed he’s spoken to James and the player contracted the virus and was out bounds for 16 days. James is now trying to get up to speed.

Addressing why James didn’t start the tie in Spain, Bonner made it clear:

“He’s not fit though. I spoke to James at the weekend. He’s recovering. He’s had Covid and obviously his fitness isn’t up to standard, so I think that’s probably why he isn’t in the team. Bonner told BBC Sportsound on Thursday night [17:40].

“He told me he was out for 16 days, that’s a long time to be out, and he hasn’t been able to train or anything.”

Callum McGregor being out was a massive blow for the bhoys who are already out on their feet and lacking in numbers.

We need players back pronto and also need to make sure we bring in a few more players in the winter window.
