Benfica’s decision to leave Paulo Bernardo out of their squad for the friendly match against Brentford has intensified speculation about the midfielder’s imminent move to Celtic.

Bernardo, who was neither included in the starting lineup nor listed among the substitutes, is reportedly close to completing a £3.5 million transfer to the Scottish club.

After a successful loan stint at Celtic last season, Bernardo is expected to sign a five-year deal, cementing his stay at Celtic Park. The agreement also includes a 30% sell-on clause, favouring Benfica in any future sale of the midfielder.

This move marks Bernardo as Celtic’s first outfield signing of the summer and comes as a boost for the team as they prepare for the upcoming season, but it doesn’t exactly make the squad stronger when compared to last term.

His absence from the Benfica team that drew 1-1 with Brentford has raised hopes among Celtic supporters that an official announcement could be made soon, especially with the team returning from their pre-season tour in the USA.
