Benjamin Siegrist signed on as a Celtic player this week and revealed he hasn’t come to Glasgow to play second fiddle.

When speaking to the mainstream media, Benjamin revealed he has been pitch side for a very famous Celtic defeat back in 2002.

The 30-year-old recalled Martin O’Neill’s side being dumped out of the Champions league qualifiers by Basel and Benjamin got a front row view of things as a ball boy behind the goals.

He told CelticTV: “It’s a boyhood dream.

“When I was young I was a ball boy with my first team BC Basel, behind Rab Douglas.

Celtic’s famous defeat

The bhoys and supporters were bitterly disappointed to be knocked out of the Champions League. However – it set them on a course for a UEFA Cup run that would see them get all the way to the final in Seville. The Hoops, with Larsson, Sutton and co in toe would take out the likes of Blackburn, Liverpool and Boavista on their run to the final.

Celtic took the final to extra time with Jose Mourinho’s Porto but finally felt defeat – the game ending 3-2 on the night.

It’s a funny old game, Benjamin being there the night Celtic would be sent on a trajectory to the UEFA Cup final is a good omen as the player gets set to start his Celtic career.
