Highly rated Scottish midfielder Billy Gilmour helped Chelsea to a victory over Liverpool on Tuesday night in the FA Cup.

The former Ibrox trainee has been impressing for Frank Lampard’s side and the Englishman gave him a start for the quarter-final tie.

There are high hopes for the midfielder from both his club and country. At one point he was on a trajectory to make the Ibrox first team before Chelsea came calling.

After watching the player do really well against Liverpool I recalled the interview Billy did about switching from Ibrox to Stamford Bridge.

When he looked at where he’d be on the pitch, Billy was certain of one thing if he started playing in the Ibrox midfield.

“If I’d matched myself up against Scott Brown, for instance, he’d bully me for a full game. He’s the best midfielder in Scotland by far so if I had to go up against him, I’d have no chance. Maybe technically, I’d be OK. But in terms of running about and pushing him off the ball – no chance” Gilmour told TheScotsman.

“So that’s the way I looked at it. Would I have been ready at that stage? The answer would have been no.”

Citing Scott Brown as one of the reasons why he decided to move to Stamford Bridge is amusing to say the least but the lad is right.

The physicality of our game can leave many good players behind. Had he gone up against Brown and lost the battle he’d be branded a dud and a lightweight.

Gilmour has gone down to Chelsea, developed his game and right now, it looks like he’s made the correct decision. Considering Celtic are still dominating and he just helped his club beat Liverpool.

  1. Very refreshing to hear the young lad being so honest ,without having to force his words about a Celtic player out through gritted teeth.
For that alone i wish him well and hope he fulfills his potential.
