In what has to be the most bizarre article to date. The Daily Express has consciously published a story about google searches.

The Express decided to take up the story brought to light by FootballTicketPad.com who analysed global search data for football merchandise.

The paper’s headline reads ‘RANGERS WAY AHEAD OF CELTIC IN MERCHANDISE SEARCHES AS IBROX CLUB HITS EUROPE’S TOP 10’

You’ve read that correctly, we have an article published by the sports editor of a Scottish newspaper bragging about search engine analytics; Comparing Celtic and Rangers.

While it’s a complete and utter shambles of an article, the devil is in the detail. Lindsay Herron of the Express writes: The Ibrox club is averaging 45,400 searches each month for merchandise. That’s 13,000 more than Celtic overall, but the analysis shows that more users have shown interest in the Hoops’ Adidas home shirt than the Rangers one.

So wait, while there are more searches for the Ibrox club there’s actually more interest in the Celtic merchandise.

I don’t even know where to go with any of this. Had Celtic had more merchandise queries than our rivals – we wouldn’t be rushing to put it on social media never mind a national newspaper.

It’s the weird place we live in and the constant need to churn out utter tripe like this. Are there Rangers fans out there this afternoon thinking ‘We didn’t manage to win the league and gain an automatic Champions League spot, but at least there’s been more searches on google for our stuff’ – if there is, well, more power to them.

If you’re looking for a reason why fan media continues to flourish, it’s because we hold idiotic articles like this to account.

Celtic released their away kit last month and recently put their new adidas home kit up for presale. The bhoys merchandise has done incredibly well since the German sportswear company took over.

  1. The reason there’s more searches for MERCH is due to all the huns trying to find a Castore product that isn’t a piece of overpriced garbage! Yet more desperate stuff from Scotland’s “journalists”…Jesus wept what a shower of fuds….
