DAVID TURNBULL had shed some light on why Anthony Ralston was told to leave the field of play – delaying kick off on Thursday against Ferencvaros.

The referee wasn’t happy with the Celtic defender and sharply told him to go sort himself out. Why? Because Anthony had intentionally ripped the back of his socks because it helps alleviate the chance of cramp during the game.

Speaking about the incident David Turnbull told the Scotsman: “Haha – you will need to ask him that.

“I think he cuts the back of them to try and avoid cramp but with it being a European tie I don’t think the referees let you away with that. So the physios had to tape it up which meant he had to run back off again.

“It was not exactly that start we wanted, but it was a good laugh.”

A lot of players have been using the method of ripping up the back of their socks nowadays.

Anthony has played a lot of minutes this season and cramp is likely to set in the late we get into a game.

If it does proactively help players dodge cramp the referee should be a bit more lenient.

The tape didn’t seem to affect the defender anyway. Celtic ran out 3-2 winners on the night in Budapest, Anthony playing the entire game.

Now you’re more aware of players doing this, it’s likely you’ll notice it more.

The defender just signed a new long term deal with the Hoops after starting this season. The Celtic academy graduate continues to prove a lot of fans wrong. Under different circumstances, Anthony could have been let go by the club in the summer. What a turn around it’s been.
