It has been the running joke over the past 18 months. Every time there’s a Glasgow Derby coming up we get the obligatory feel good story from Ibrox that either a player or manager is about to sign a new deal or has indeed just done that.

The thought must be the feel good factor it could generate before the game – it’s not really worked if you look at their trophy haul.

Well, we’re not sure if Celtic’s timing has anything to do with that but if it has then, bravo.

The bhoys have just announced a new five-year deal for Mikey Johnston who becomes the latest in a long line of Celts to pledge their future to the club.

On the eve of Celtic’s final game of the year which happens to be a Glasgow Derby, it’s great news. However, we’re sure it will have no bearing on the game at all.

Mikey has risen to prominence under Brendan Rodgers but even more under Neil Lennon and deserves his new deal. Had he not been injured this season, Mikey would likely be one of the first names on the team sheet.
