BRENDAN RODGERS has stated categorically he would rather Boyata stayed and helped the Celtic cause the rest of this season than sell him now.

The defender is out of contract at the end of May and will be free to leave the club at that time. Boyata’s agent has already said there will be no talks with Celtic over a new deal and that he was fielding a few offers for his client.

This means Celtic could be tempted to cash in on the player this month if a bid comes in for his services; rather than lose him for nothing in the summer.

However, the Celtic manager believes his immediate future is at Celtic and he’s happy to see where the dice land in the summer.

Speaking to SunSport the Irishman said this when asked if there was any movement on Boyata:

“No, nothing.

“He will just stay calm and see out the season and see where he’s at. There will be interest in him of course but nothing concrete at the moment.

“Does it suit us if he stays? Yeah, it’s something we would want. He’s a very, very good player.”

Whether this remains the case or not is still up in the air. Brendan Rodgers spoke during the last window about keeping Moussa Dembele at the club but the striker ultimately ended up leaving the club.

If Boyata can keep playing the way he was doing before his horrible game at Ibrox then he will continue to be a valuable asset until the end of the season.

Celtic are more than likely going to be in a position where there two first choice centre-backs are gone in the summer when Boyata and Benkovic leave.
