BRENDAN Rodgers has yet again called for more quality and experience in his Celtic team, but did praise players like Matt O’Riley, who have stepped up from League 1 to the Champions League seamlessly.

It was a disappointing night on Tuesday, with Celtic getting another thumping in Europe. Despite a promising start in the first three games of the Champions League, with positives to take from the games, they couldn’t take anything away from Tuesday night.

The manager has been vocal in his desire to add some quality and experience to the squad, speaking during the summer window and after it.

Speaking via Celtic TV, Brendan Rodgers said:

“It’s always a challenge, but that level is about quality, that’s the reality. We played them before and were very close, you know, playing at home with amazing supporters really pushing us, fantastic performance.

“But the Champions League level is the very highest level in European football, and it is about the quality, especially at the top end of your field.

“For us, it’s a continuation of fighting, running, working, and developing players to have the belief at that level. You think a lot of our players, look at Matt O’Riley, just over two years ago he’s playing in League One, and he’s now playing in the Champions League.

“We’ve got other young guys, like Liam Scales and players who are really sampling it and have thrived in it this year.

“But what you can’t do is give them experience, and that comes from being in the competition and obviously from adverse moments as well, because that adversity helps you learn. We were all disappointed the other night.”

The transfer business in the summer was unsatisfactory in the view of most, and that is clear by the results in Europe. If there was a little bit more quality and depth, Celtic could easily be sitting with more than a point after four games.
