Brendan Rodgers has confirmed that Cameron Carter-Vickers will undergo surgery today, with the Celtic defender facing up to five months on the sidelines.
The American centre-back bravely played through pain in midweek, but as the full-time whistle blew, he collapsed to the turf and required medical assistance.
He was unable to walk off unaided, needing support from the physio team as he hobbled down the tunnel which was a worrying sight for fans who feared the worst.
Their fears were confirmed when Rodgers revealed on Friday that Carter-Vickers’ season is effectively over, describing the injury as a major setback for both the player and the team.
Speaking again on Sunday, the Celtic boss said: [BBC Sportsound]
“Obviously the other boys that are out. Cameron Carter-Vickers will have an operation tomorrow. So like I said earlier in the week, he could be three to five months, depending on him, on that injury.”
The defender’s absence leaves a huge gap at the back for Celtic, who have already been struggling for consistency in defence.
Dane Murray was handed a start in Carter-Vickers’ place at Tynecastle, but endured a torrid afternoon.
The young centre-half was involved in all three Hearts goals, scoring an own goal, stepping away from the ball as it went towards the goal and conceding a penalty as the hosts sealed a 3-1 win.
It was a performance to forget and a reminder of just how vital Carter-Vickers is to Celtic’s backline.
When Falkirk come to town midweek, on good form, it will be interesting to see if Trusty gets the nod ahead of Murray.
