Although the league season is yet to begin, goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel already looks to have been a shrewd signing from Celtic.

Brought in as a free agent on a one-year deal with the option of another, the Denmark captain has impressed in the few pre-season games he’s played so far.

Schmeichel debuted against Manchester City, pulling off some top saves with his distribution equally as fine. Similarly versus Chelsea, the 37-year-old was formidable, failing to concede in the 73 minutes he played against the English Premier League outfit.

Brendan Rodgers knows the stopper from his time at Leicester. Schmeichel was dependable for the Irishman down south, and the manager knew what he’d bring to the Parkhead changing room.

The retired Joe Hart needed to be replaced both on the park and off it, and it seems Schmeichel has done just that. Indeed, Rodgers recently admitted that the new signing has already given his teammates a boost.

“Just him coming in in this last 10, 12 days or so has given the players a lift”, he said (Sky Sports).

“Having worked with Kasper for the period I did, I knew his hunger, I knew how competitive he is, and I also knew how good he is around his teammates.

“He’s settled in very, very well. He’s obviously an experienced goalkeeper, but he’s an outstanding goalkeeper and he’s someone we’re very lucky to have.”

Schmeichel will make his full Hoops debut this Sunday. The new number one will experience the renowned Celtic Park atmosphere for the first time as yet another league flag is unfurled.

  1. At 70+ I remember a number of excellent goalkeepers we have had. I’m sure KS will prove to be an inspirational signing right up there with the very best if not the greatest, the Larsson of the goalies.
