Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has offered a positive update on Alistair Johnston’s fitness after the Canadian international missed the 4-0 Boxing Day victory over Motherwell due to a hip injury.

Johnston, who has been managing a hip issue for a few weeks, has missed the last two games after he was subbed off against Rangers in the League Cup final, with Anthony Ralston stepping in at right-back in his absence.
Rodgers confirmed that Johnston is nearing a return and could be ready for Celtic’s next match against St Johnstone on Sunday.
Speaking after the win over Motherwell, he said: [BBC]
“He should hopefully be ok. He was close for today, but we left it. Tony came in and did a great job for us. Alistair has been improving each day, and we just want him to do more work and be okay for the weekend”
Ralston took full advantage of his starting opportunity, delivering a solid defensive display and contributing effectively to Celtic’s attacking phases. His performance ensures that Rodgers has a reliable option in Ralston should Johnston require more time to fully recover.
With Celtic set to face St Johnstone at home on Sunday, Rodgers will monitor Johnston’s progress closely. While Ralston’s form provides a degree of cover, Johnston’s return would boost Celtic’s defensive and offensive play as they aim to maintain their momentum at the top of the Scottish Premiership.
It will be a big boost for Celtic if Johnston can get some minutes on Sunday ahead of the Glasgow Derby next Thursday at Ibrox.
