A wonderful first-time volley from Kyogo Furuhashi at Ibrox helped Celtic secure a deserved 1-0 victory in the maiden Glasgow Derby of the 2023/24 season. Throughout, the Bhoys remained utterly solid as they put in a performance of champions.

In the Hoops’ team, the likes of Joe Hart, Matt O’Riley, and Callum McGregor stood out, however, it was centre-back Liam Scales who was given the man of the match award. The Irishman was terrific at centre-half in this afternoon’s match.

After the game, Scales’ fellow countryman and gaffer Brendan Rodgers was full of praise for him. The 50-year-old said (Sky Sports): “He was outstanding. Liam’s a guy that obviously he’s spent a lot of time out of the club what I can rely on is that he’s a warrior. I thought when he had to be he stood up, he won his headers, he defended, he was brave and that’s what you have to be at times.”

Many were fearful when the Irishman was named in the starting lineup. It was assumed new signing Nat Phillips would start, however, he wasn’t in the squad and Scales indeed got the nod.

Such a transpiration turned out to be greatly positive for the visitors. Scales was nothing but reliable this afternoon, and going forward against Dundee in a few weeks, it would be greatly surprising to see him dropped.
