Former Celtic and current Leicester City defender Filip Benkovic has been told by his boss, Brendan Rodgers, he has to earn the right to play at Cardiff City, where he is currently based on loan.

So far this season, the Croatian hasn’t feature for the Welsh side. As quoted by WalesOnline, Rodgers comments suggested there could be a possibility of him being recalled, due to the Foxes ongoing injury crisis, but for now, he has to earn his right to play in the side.

“There’s been none as of yet (conversations on short-term plan for Benkovic),” said Rodgers.

“The whole idea was for him to play but I’m also a manager and if a player for whatever reason isn’t performing in games or training, and isn’t worthy of playing… I know the business we’re in.

“So he’s obviously not played as much as he would like but he’s got to get his head down and keep working and if he gets the opportunity to play over this busy period, hopefully he can win the trust of the manager and play more games.”

Benkovic was a bit of a fans favourite in his time at Celtic Park. The defender looked like he had the ability to stroll games at his own will.

Unfortunately, though, injuries hampered the defender’s progress and he hasn’t really kicked on ever since.

If there was an option to make a deal happen, I’m sure fans would be more than happy to welcome Benkovic back to the club. For now, though it looks like he will either be staying or going back to his parent club.
