BRENDAN RODGERS has chose a strange time to come out with some fascinating tidbits on his time at Celtic.
The now Leicester boss should be credited with unprecedented success over the piece at Celtic but the way he left the club will always leave a bad taste for so.
Speaking to RecordSport, the Irishman detailed his first week at the club and revealed Peter Lawwell was ready to sell Kieran Tierney to Arsenal for £10m – with an interest from the London club very real even back then.
“The very first week I was there I was told that there was interest from Arsenal for around about 10 million quid,” Rodgers told RecordSport.
Peter Lawwell was very clear that this was an opportunity that was there for Kieran. But obviously we didn’t want the player to go and it was my job to try to convince him to stay.
“You have to be transparent with players in a situation like that so I just said, ‘Listen, we could have a great cycle here. I really want to develop you and make you a better player’.
“I think very quickly he enjoyed the training; he enjoyed the work and he enjoyed the culture we were trying to create. Thankfully he decided he was going to commit to another deal which was absolutely great news for us all.
“He was a big talent and we wanted to hang on to our best talents. So he stayed and he gave everything to Celtic, increased his market value and then ended up moving there for the price that he did.”
As we all know now, the player stayed for another three seasons and out lasted Brendan Rodgers in that regard. The Celtic left-back moved to Arsenal for a record breaking £25m and Rodgers should very much get the credit for that with the way he and his team developed the defender.
The way they approached training was the most professional Celtic had ever been run to that point and Brendan got a lot out of the players while he was there. The former Parkhead boss spoke about cycles and it was evident the side he had built was coming to the end of that cycle – performance wise at least as the trophies kept coming.
