BRENDAN RODGERS admitted he once tried to sign new Ibrox signing Steven Davis from old Rangers back when he was the Swansea manager.

The Celtic manager was flying high at the time and ready to take on all comers in the Premier League after an impressive year in the Championship.

Rodgers tried to snap up the midfielder while he recognised the Ibrox club were in a ‘difficult moment’; alluding to their crippling finances and massive tax bill which would see them enter administration and eventual liquidation.

Swansea and Rodgers didn’t get their man, and the player went to Southampton as he deserted the sinking ship.

The Celtic manager still has praise for Davis and believes he is ‘underrated at times.

“I wanted to sign Steven when he was at Rangers when we got promoted to the Premier League with Swansea.” he told SunSport.

“At that time, Rangers were in a difficult moment and he was their captain, and I’d seen him since he was a young player.

“He’s a very, very underrated footballer.

“He keeps the game simple, passes, moves, can orchestrate games.”

“I recognised his qualities and he’ll be very good for Rangers.”
