Celtic signed their first outfield player of the summer, adding to their midfield by confirming the signing of Paulo Bernardo from Benfica on a five-year contract, culminating after a successful loan stint and subsequent months of speculation about his future.
At just 22 years old, Bernardo has already made a significant mark during his time at Celtic, making 33 appearances and scoring key goals, including one in a 2-1 win in the Glasgow derby.
His contribution was vital in the Scottish Cup final, where his shot resulted in a rebound that Adam Idah converted into the winning goal. This permanent signing is a continuation of his positive impact and a testament to his integration into the team and Celtic’s future plans.
Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers expressed his pleasure at securing Bernardo’s services on a long-term basis. Speaking to Celtic TV, he said: “I am delighted that we have secured Paulo on this long-term contract.
“Paulo had a real desire to join us permanently, having had a great experience already at Celtic, and from our side we wanted to bring a quality player who has already made such an important contribution to the club.
“Paulo made a great impact for us at some real pivotal moments, delivering for us when he needed to for the team and we are sure that he can bring that same determination, ability and quality to us over the next number of years.
“He has been a popular figure in the dressing-room and I know the rest of the players will welcome him back warmly.”
That’s the third signing for Celtic this summer, but there really has to be more. It’s disappointing that the squad is actually weaker than last season, with Bernardo not really adding anything as he was already there.
