Luke McCowan stole the show at Celtic Park this afternoon as he staked his claim to start for the Hoops against Aberdeen at Pittodrie on Wednesday night.

The Scottish midfielder has hardly put a foot wrong in his time at Celtic, and while this hasn’t been rewarded with starts, he was offered a rare chance this afternoon and made the most of it with a goal and three assists in a sensational game for a player who has gone under the radar in recent months.

With Brendan Rodgers full of praise for McCowan in an afternoon where he reached a level that Hoops supporters have been hoping he could.

Rodgers said: (BBC Sportsound), “He’s really settled in well. He’s obviously had to be patient.

“He gets his reward for how hard he works, it tells you everything about him.

“He was so good, his pressure, his energy, and his quality.

“I was so pleased for him.”

McCowan has always looked impressive off the bench, but as the old adage goes, you have to make the most of your starts.

He did just that and more with a performance that will go down as one of the best from a Celtic player this season.

With McCowan stepping it up, it begs the question: McCowan or Reo Hatate on Wednesday against Aberdeen.

The Scotsman’s pressing and energy bring a different dimension to Hatate, who is at times unplayable and at others passive.
