Brendan Rodgers has stressed the importance of not standing still in the transfer market as Celtic approaches the final month of the summer window.

With the acquisition of Paulo Bernardo from Benfica nearing completion for a reported fee of £3.5 million, Rodgers acknowledged the urgency to bolster the squad further.

Paulo Bernardo’s permanent move follows his successful loan period during which Celtic clinched a domestic double. His signing, along with the arrivals of goalkeepers Kasper Schmeichel and Viljami Sinisalo, marks a slight step forward, but Rodgers is keenly aware of the need for more first-team-ready players.

Addressing the complexities of the transfer market, Rodgers said to Sky Sports:

“We still have work to do but, with transfers, there are lots of moving parts. It’s never as easy as just seeing a player and bringing him in.

“We’d hope by the end of August we will have the team supported in the way we wanted.

“It’s so important that you don’t snooze in this game of football. You always have to be developing and improving. And we want to ensure that we have an improved squad for this season in order to take on all the challenges that we have.”

Celtic are going into the first game of the season on Sunday in a weaker position than they were in when they won the Scottish Cup Final 66 days ago. It’s not something many Celtic fans were expecting, but it’s the reality that faces the club just now. It’s going to have to be a big and busy month if Celtic are to please the fans.
