Former Celtic youth player and current Dundee star Paul McGowan has made the claim his former teammate Steve Caulker left Brendan Rodgers raging during his time at Celtic.

Speaking to the opengoal podcast, McGowan claimed Caulker had upset Rodgers when the defender was languishing at QPR and tried to bring him to Celtic.

It has been documented since about the interest Rodgers had in his former Liverpool centre-back before he sensationally signed for Dundee.

Caulker has spoke before about turning down the Scottish Champions. Speaking to the Scotsman back in 2017, the defender said:

“[Joining Celtic] came close. I decided in the end to stay in London.

“I was early on in my recovery, and I felt my support network was best in London.

“I opted out of Scotland at that moment, but I’m pleased to be up here now and it’s good to see Brendan doing really well there again.”

McGowan claimed the money being offered from Celtic wasn’t anywhere near Caulkers QPR deal.

“What he was getting here (at Celtic) wasn’t making a year of what he was getting at QPR.”

“He told Brendan he wasn’t signing and Brendan was fuming at him.”

Caulker spent time in Scotland with Dundee before leaving the club in February 2018.

The Englishman now plays for Alanyaspor in Turkey.

Rodgers had major recruitment problems during his time at Celtic. Self inflicted wounds by appointing Lee Congerton who didn’t have much to show from his time at the club before heading off to Leicester.

Celtic have been rebuilding the recruitment under Nicky Hammond since last summer.
