Bring Him Home; Ex-Celt Makes Case For Interesting Parkhead Return

The rebuild will get underway this summer and it’s all about looking to the future.

But there has to be some sort of cohesion, and players who have the understanding of what it’s like to play for Celtic.

If you bring in ten or eleven players to the club who are all unfamiliar with Glasgow and what Celtic are about apart from what they’ve seen on youtube then it becomes problematic. You need a mix of characters and guys who can instil the sort of passion and pride into players who have not been brought up around the club.

One position that needs urgently addressed in the summer is the man between the sticks.

We have three 2nd choice goalkeepers fighting it out to be first choice at the moment.

Former Celtic defender Mark Wilson believes there is a lot of merit in bringing back David Marshall for next season, after the Euros.

Speaking on the Huddle Podcast, Wilson put the case forward: “A name that hasn’t went away really from the summer that I think Celtic should go for again, just to get in the door. Number one, it would sort out the problem, I think they should go for David Marshall again.

“People say, no, it’s a step backwards, he’s 36 years old.

“David Marshall, I see pictures of him, he’s holding the player of the year for Scotland. I know he’s still got another year to go (of his Derby contract) but surely Marsh would be up for coming back to Glasgow.”

Celtic fans weren’t overly enthusiastic about David’s name coming up last year before we brought in Barkas, but with hindsight, they would have clearly taken the former Celtic Camp Nou hero back.

As we keep reiterating, it’s down to the new setup to deal with these things but could Marshall give a new manager a season’s breathing space to find a long term goalkeeper.
