Football documentaries have never been more popular. From Sunderland til I die to the Al or nothing serious. There’s a demand for well told stories in a more dramatic and well put together way.

Football docs of the past, while they have been full of interesting knowledge, they fail to capture the imagination.

The preview for The Three Kings captured our attention – firstly because Jock Stein is heavily featured but secondly it intertwines three football giants and shows how three men from around Glasgow rose to footballing prominence and changed the game.

The documentary will have a short stay in theatres from November 1 and will head to Amazon on November 16.

We will be reviewing the doc before it hits screens and will give you our honest opinion on the doc.

Here is the full press release:

A brand-new feature length cinema documentary, THE THREE KINGS, is being released in the UK and Ireland this November.

From the Oscar and BAFTA-winning producers of Diego Maradona and Senna and the director of I Believe In Miracles, THE THREE KINGS is the definitive film portrait of three men who were born in the central lowlands of Scotland within 30 miles of each other – and went on to change the history of football: Busby. Shankly. Stein.

Matt Busby, Bill Shankly and Jock Stein all came from mining communities around Glasgow where the call of the pits was only drowned out by a call of the pitch, and only then if your talents warranted it.

THE THREE KINGS offers a fascinating look at three remarkable men and managers. How their upbringings shaped their lives and their football teams. How they became the best of friends and how they became the fiercest of rivals. Each man arriving in three great British industrial cities and changing the life of the people forever. Glasgow, Liverpool and Manchester.

They would turn three clubs in those cities into three of the most famous sporting institutions on the planet. Celtic, Liverpool and Manchester United today have a combined global fan base of billions, and this is the story of how that happened.

This film is about more than three men. It is about Three Kings the men that made modern football.

BAFTA-winning director Jonny Owen (I Believe In Miracles) says:

“My Father, who had worked underground, always told me that Bubsy, Stein and Shankly were once miners. That generation of people are leaving us now. It’s astonishing what they gave, the legacy they left to British culture. From the NHS to football they left their incredible mark. This film celebrates them and their remarkable achievements.”

THE THREE KINGS is produced by Box to Box Films, with distribution handled by Lorton Distribution.

In cinemas from November 1st, on DVD and digital November 16th and available to pre-order now at: https://amzn.to/3gYgIeA

Steins quote during the preview very pertinent as we build up to an empty stadium Glasgow Derby – “If you play a football match without fans, you’ve got nothing”

  1. All the old Co at sevco have is, Scot Simon hiding in his hotel room bed in ’67 having a wank, and’ ‘saying go away ya cun7s’ . The ’71 team winning the mug winners mug, after not winning any cup to qualify. Also after quite a few pitch invasions at 3-2. And brown brogues with blakeys at the front. Otherwise Hee-fuc&ing-haw. Ohh, and Willie’s Waddle telling Glasgow wimmin on screen, to chain themselfs to sinks. And not to watch nor play fitba.
